Owiny Sigoma Band, “Doyoi Nyajo Nam.” The band is, per Google, a collaboration between British and Kenyan musicians that grew out of a trip to Kenya organized by a group called Art of Protest. The groove is strong.
I’ve been listening to free Google Music tracks all day, and this, “Fisbawdup” by Willie Evans, Jr., is the first one that’s grabbed me. I don’t know anything about Evans. He’s apparently a producer/rapper who has worked with such as Mr. Lif.
Theophilus London, “I Stand Alone.” Please, Theophilus London and Santigold, make an album together.
(If you call him “Theo,” I will get mad at you.)
Wellington Downs, “Grapefruit & Rye,” noisy (instrumental) but not noise. Be careful about the volume.
Porcelain Raft, “Amateur’s Feeling.” P’ork calls it “typically shadowy.” I guess?
JoJo Pellegrino f/ Vinnie Paz, “Pellienza”
I think this part below is Vinnie, and it friggin’ kills me (my transcription, apologies for errors):
Construction is nothing
Dump a fucking slug in his tummy
My father told me you could learn a lot from a dummy
It’s hot and it’s sunny
That’s the fucking opposite from me
The brain particles is everywhere, they consciousness ugly
My father above me, I swear on fucking god that’s above me
That I will torture y’all and slaughter y’all that talk to me funny
I’m awful with money
Especially if you hoarding it from me
Here’s a dead rapper, father, take this offering from me
You awful and clumsy
Couldn’t learn the sorcery from me
Couldn’t take the Necronomicon glossary from me
Omar LinX f/ Emilio Rojas, “Say Goodbye”. I like Emilio’s verse a lot.
Glasses Malone, “May 1st”. “I done seen it all / that’s why they call me Glasses” — I’m not inclined to doubt this. Also, I might play this song 10-15 times over the next three days.
Babe Rainbow, “Set Loose.” “Babe Rainbow is Cameron Reed and his laptop based in Vancouver, BC. Canada.” That also describes the sound pretty well. The sole YouTube commenter says “epic,” but I disagree with that completely.
The Lighthouse and the Whaler, “Under Mountain, Under Ground.” It’s in my wheelhouse, but it’s probably not in yours. I’m a sucker for vocal harmonies and dudes who like whales.
